Holi, the festival of colours: meaning and customs
Holi is a spring festival celebrated above all in India and Nepal. People throw coloured powder at each other and celebrate that winter is over. There are Holi events in Europe too, often in parks or at festivals.
Meaning
Holi recalls the victory of good over evil and welcomes spring. On the evening before the colour day the Holika Dahan bonfire burns.
The coloured-powder fight
The next day friends, families and strangers throw coloured powder (gulal) and water at each other. Social differences play no role on this day; it is about joy, community and reconciliation.
The date
Holi follows the lunar calendar and usually falls in March. If you want to join in, wear old clothes and put oil on your skin and hair beforehand.
